Description

Circular Energy NPC is a South African non-profit Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) dedicated to driving the country’s transition towards a sustainable circular economy. Established in 2021, Circular Energy was created to assist companies defined as “Producers” in meeting their obligations under South Africa’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations published in
November 2020 by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The organisation works with producers that are importers or local manufacturers, retailers, waste management companies, and other stakeholders to implement effective take-back systems for a range of waste streams, including waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries, lighting equipment, packaging, and lubricant oil waste. By ensuring these materials are collected, recycled, and reintegrated into the economy, Circular Energy reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills and supports the recovery of valuable resources, skills development and SMME development and job creation.
As a not-for-profit entity, Circular Energy reinvests all its resources into building sustainable systems, community engagement, and industry capacity. The organisation supports members with full EPR compliance, including producer registration, fee management, reporting, and waste diversion strategies. This makes it a trusted partner for businesses seeking to align with both regulatory requirements and the global sustainability goals.
Circular Energy’s leadership, headed by CEO Patricia Schröder, a registered Chartered Environmental Manager (C.WEM), brings decades of expertise in environmental management, engineering, governance, and stakeholder engagement. The organisation actively participates in local and international forums, including collaborations with the Institute of Waste Management of South Africa (IWMSA) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), to share knowledge and advance best practices.
Through its initiatives, Circular Energy not only helps producers remain compliant but also drives innovation in waste management, fosters job creation in the recycling value chain, and contributes to South Africa’s progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
